DANCEFEST! Labor Day Weekend, 2008
Centennial Hall
Organization and Sponsors
The Juneau DanceFest, an annual event that is held over Labor Day weekend at Centennial Hall, brings dance instructors and attracts dancers to Juneau for workshops and social dances. DanceFest provides instruction and the opportunity to practice a wide variety of dance styles including ballroom dances such as waltz and tango; popular dance such as hip-hop and contra; and dances from other cultures such as belly dance
and Native American dance. Workshop participants and members of the general public have the opportunity to attend three dances with either live bands or DJ'd music.
The event was founded by Heather Haugland and Tim Adair in 2006. Heather and
Tim continue to organize, raise funds, and run DanceFest with the help of several volunteers. The dance workshops are taught by both volunteer and paid instructors. The music for the dances is provided by local bands and groups from outside of Juneau.
Juneau DanceFest is a project of Juneau International Folkdancers (JIF), a non-profit group dedicated to teaching and practicing international folk dances and to advancing all types of dance in Juneau.
In addition to grants and in-kind donations, Juneau DanceFest is made possible through fundraisers such as the
Latin Carnaval Celebration that took place in February, donations of Alaska airline miles, monetary donations by individuals, and workshop fees. Non-corporate sponsors, "Friends of DanceFest", will receive acknowledgement on our sponsors page unless they prefer to remain anonymous.
This project is supported in part by the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council and the City and Borough of Juneau.
This project is supported by the Alaska State Council on the Arts.
